DS Lite Coming to America

Good news for everyone who has fallen in love with Nintendo’s recently revealed DS Lite. According to IGN, the portable machine will be coming out here after it release this spring in Japan. It’s unfortunate that we’re going to have to wait longer to get it, but we’re still glad it’s coming out here. Of course there’s always the option of importing.

Nintendo DS Lite Revealed

Just two weeks after Nintendo quelled reports of a rumored redesign, they go and announce the updated version of the Nintendo DS - that being the Nintendo DS Lite. Feast your eyes on the smaller, lighter, Apple-er Nintendo DS. Now, like the upgrade from the Game Boy Advance to the GBA:SP, the Nintendo DS Lite is pretty much the same machine, just tweaked out with a few improvements. For starters, it has a smaller footprint than the original DS, and is lighter. The new unit is just 133.0 x 73.9 x 21.55 mm when folded and weighs 218 grams, while the current DS measures 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm and weighs 275 grams. You will also notice that the Start and Select buttons have moved, as have the microphone and speakers.
While the LCD screens remain the same size, they are now brighter. You can even adjust the brightness between four different settings. Now, this one is currently announced for release in Japan on March 9, 2006 at a price of 16,800 yen ($145), which includes AC adapter. That is about $15 more than the current Nintendo DS sells for in Japan. No word yet on when - or if - this one will see an American release. We will definitely be keeping our eye on this one.

Own a DS? If you do, which color or variant do you have? We’d assume most DS owners have a standard Titanium or Blue one. However, there are a few other different DS variants - most of which I didn’t even know about prior to jumping over to the British Gaming Blog. Both Japan and Europe have more standard colors than we do in North America. It’s official. Mario Kart DS owns.
Nintendo’s DS titled has raced up the charts to become the top selling portable title for November and December ‘05, and also #6 on last month’s best sellers’. It looks like the Nintendo DS finally has a ‘must-have’ title. Yeah, Nintendogs, Advance Wars DS, and Kirby: Canvas Curse are all great games - but the different games honestly don’t appeal to everyone. On the other hand, anyone from a casual to hardcore gamer can pick up MKDS and have a blast. The game’s online mode certainly helps the games replay and Nintendo doesn’t (and shouldn’t) expect the game’s sales to slow down anytime soon.

Contrary to earlier rumors, Nintendo will not be releasing a redesigned Nintendo DS any time soon. Putting things into consideration, releasing a new DS design doesn’t make much sense now anyways - especially considering how well Nintendo’s portable machine has been selling both here and in Japan.

According to various sources online, Nintendo is set to unveil a new design for its portable DS system very soon. As is, the portable machine has been selling very well so a redesign would only pull more people in. We’re all for it and looking forward to seeing what the new DS looks like (should Nintendo unveil one).

Nintendo’s sorry. This is in regards to Japanese consumers who want a DS, but haven’t been able to get one. According to Game Daily, “The DS has actually become the fastest selling system in Japanese history, with over 5 million units sold in that country alone.” The fastest selling system in Japanese history! If that’s not an accomplishment, we don’t know what is. Keep up the good work Nintendo! Just keep up with the supply count as well.

Nintendo Sells 13 Million DS’s, 1 Million Mario Karts

How about that Nintendo. In a recently released press release, the company announced that it has sold 13 million DS units worldwide. To top that off, Mario Kart DS has sold 1 million copies since its release seven weeks ago. And finally, over half a million gamers have logged into Nintendo’s wireless service. Not bad, not bad at all.
